One of the Surrey Gardens Trust's principal aims is to encourage the development and use of school grounds as a learning environment. We believe that if children can learn about the natural world by becoming involved in appreciating and caring for a garden round their school, they will continue to value the land around them in future life.

INVESTMENT in GROUNDS brings GAINS in
LEARNING • AESTHETICS • CONSERVATION • ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES

Many schools have reported improvements in: social behaviour; a sense of pride and ownership; motivation and interest; a reduction in accidents.

New Monument School, Maybury, Woking, received an award in 2008 and transformed a derelict site into an outdoor classroom with a woodland garden and pond. They also created a vegetable and herb garden.

As well as offering advice and assistance to schools, the Surrey Gardens Trust makes an ANNUAL FINANCIAL AWARD.

The Schools Award for 2009 was announced at the beginning of the Summer Term with a closing date for applications of 22 July 2009. Because the number of applications received had increased considerably from that in previous years, the Trustees decided to make £3,500 available, instead of the £2,000 as announced. The judging committee apportioned this sum between the successful schools.

Nineteen schools sent in applications and of these sixteen have received a cheque and a certificate.

The schools which have received an Award are listed below:
